Although I am a big proponent of keeping your business expenses to a minimum, I had a very hard time finding ways to actually make a decent amount of money with my business. There were a number of reasons for this, but rather than list them all in one post, I thought that it’d be best break down the 5 greatest insights that I learned that helped me increase my sales by over 800% in less than a month.
The foundation
First and foremost, if you are going to be in business you need to have one thing constantly ringing in your mind: It’s not about me, it’s about my clients. It sounds like common sense, but so many entrepreneurs miss this simple axiom. It’s not surprising though, since most people who start their own business were, or still are, in corporate America.
As a full-time employee, you are – for the most part – hired because of what you can do. In other words, if a hiring manager needs a system administrator, they will typically choose the most skilled individual in a particular trade. As an entrepreneur, you are hired by knowing where your ideal client works, shops, meets people, and so on. On top of that, you need to know their pains, pleasures, language, industry, and how to convince them that you can solve their problems. Skills are secondary as an entrepreneur, and communication is primary.
Stop thinking about YOU!
The first step in earning more money is to know your ideal client in and out. The best and quickest way to do this is to ask them specific questions about their needs that relate to their service. It’s easy to surf the web and make abstract generalizations about your fictional clients, but it’s hard to get out there and actually talk to them. It’s hard because of fear of rejection. However, more often than not you can find ways to easily reach your clients and get valuable information about them.
Exercise:
Answer the following questions:
- Who is your ideal client?
- Where can you reach them?
- What are their pains?
- What are their pleasures?
- What can you do to ease their pain or fulfill their pleasure?
